Dear Friends, I am very pleased to write to you in my new role as Executive Director of HaMoked. I look forward to working with HaMoked's many partners, allies and supporters to
realize our common goal of defending human rights.
In fact, my first introduction to human rights was 26 years ago, when I came to intern at HaMoked. So I have come full circle this month, and am honored to take on this new challenge. In the three decades that have elapsed, HaMoked has grown into an incredible organization, a beacon of professionalism, expertise and impact.
HaMoked maintains a low profile and does not seek publicity for its work. Our work is devoted to advocacy on both the individual and systemic level, to change government and military policy to respect Palestinians' rights. In an increasingly hostile climate, public attention is liable to harm rather than help in much of this advocacy.
So many people may be unaware of the extent and significance of HaMoked's work. HaMoked provides assistance to more individuals than all other Israeli human rights organizations combined. We provide legal and paralegal assistance to some seven thousand people each year, many of whom have nowhere else to turn. In our areas of expertise, such as Jerusalem residency rights and the permit bureaucracy in the West Bank, we are recognized as the leading experts in the field. Through this huge caseload we are able to identify trends and design strategies not only to assist individuals but to make systemic changes in policy.
Yet being the best kept secret of the local human rights community is not helpful to raising the funds that make this work possible.
So I am turning to all of you – both those who have made donations in the past and those who are new to HaMoked: only with your support will HaMoked be able to maintain its principled, uncompromising defense of Palestinian human rights.
The Jewish New Year is upon us. This is traditionally the season for acknowledging where we have fallen short and making amends, both for ourselves as individuals and for the community. All year long HaMoked seeks to remedy the wrongs of the Israeli occupation. I invite you to make a donation to HaMoked at this time.
For all those celebrating, I extend my very best wishes for the New Year,
Sincerely yours, Jessica Montell
